The Original Heart of the South End
Long before today's shops and restaurants, Bridge Street was the south end's lifeline — the road that ran out to the original wooden swing bridge connecting Anna Maria Island to the mainland. Locals fished from the pier, shipped goods across the bay, and gathered at a handful of seaside storefronts that grew into a community.
As the old bridge gave way to a modern span and Bradenton Beach grew up around it, Bridge Street kept its salt-air, two-block character. The pier was rebuilt. Restaurants, galleries, and inns moved in. The street stayed the working center of the south end even as the rest of the island changed.
Today it's still where the AMI South End comes together — for the Sunday Market on the pier, for live music drifting out of historic bars, and for the community traditions that keep this corner of the island unmistakably its own.
